AI Grading in Higher Ed: Faster, Fairer, and More Helpful

Nov 15, 2024

As any instructor knows, grading can be incredibly time-consuming, inconsistent, and prone to bias.

Now, thanks to advances in AI, grading assignments is faster, fairer, and more consistent than ever.

In fact, AI grading is often more accurate and helpful than grading done by instructors alone.

That doesn’t mean AI will replace us! But it does mean we can get students better feedback, faster.

A study by the International University of Applied Sciences found that AI made 44% fewer errors than human graders on open-ended questions.

Another study compared AI-generated feedback to that of human instructors and found that students rated the AI feedback as more helpful, fluent, and grammatically correct.AI grading readability rates

Some tools have achieved 95%+ accuracy across multiple languages, suggesting AI is not just fast, but globally adaptable.

And while skepticism is healthy, the data is clear: AI grading tools are no longer just “good enough”—they’re often better.

Why Educators Are Embracing AI Grading

Beyond accuracy, here’s why more professors are turning to AI to grade open-ended work:

  1. AI grading saves time—a lot of it.
Instructors report saving up to 13 hours a week by using AI to draft feedback.
  2. AI doesn’t suffer from fatigue or bias.
It applies rubrics the same way every time, ensuring fairness across students and sections.
  3. AI promotes equitable grading
AI reduces disparities based on language fluency, gender, or race—issues well-documented in traditional grading.
  4. AI provides faster feedback
A fast turnaround on feedback means improved learning outcomes.

So if AI can improve the quality of our grading, the question is…
